The Most Common Pests in the UK
So what are the pests that can come into your house or business and set up their own home? And importantly, what makes them pests?
At 3mm to 5mm in length, this ant is the most common pest to invade households in the UK. They aren’t dangerous to humans but can be a nuisance and unpleasant if an infestation occurs.
Cockroaches are carriers of pathogens that cause salmonella, E Coli and Typhus, so it’s particularly important for food service businesses to control them. Look out for cylindrical shaped droppings, shed skins, and the noise of them scuttling around.
These are blood sucking insects and carriers of disease. The risk of a serious illness like malaria or yellow fever is non-existent in the UK but the irritation caused is still reason to control them.
Wasps are the pests of the summer! They hurt when they sting and they can be a real nuisance. If you find a nest near your home or business, we can safely remove it.
Rats can be carriers of disease if they live in dirty environments. They find their way in buildings easily, through cavity walls and gaps, causing a fright for the inhabitants as well as the risk of contamination.
The removal of silverfish infestations can be difficult and they reproduce rapidly. They like to live in dark, damp places, so a dehumidifier is a good way to prevent them. Also keep flour products wrapped, as that’s their main food source.
While UK varieties do not pose threats to humans, many simply cause upset when they’re found inside homes. They can bite too. They usually come indoors in Autumn to find a warm, dry place for the winter. So this is the time to make sure you hover and clean in all corners of your house.
This is another pest that we’re fortunate not to have poisonous ones of in the UK, but can cause distress. There’s also the risk of escaped exotic pets! They can be found in gardens but it’s illegal to kills snakes in the UK.
As well as being a nuisance, flies can contaminate food because of their own eating habits, which includes vomiting on and stamping on your food. DIY pest control is easy with flies, but an infestation requires the professionals.
The larvae from eggs of moths are what causes the damage to your clothing and other fabric in your home. Moths can lay up to 300 eggs during their lifetime, so an infestation needs to be acted upon quickly.
Mostly found in high-occupancy buildings such as hospitals, bed bugs cause irritation by feeding on the blood of humans, mainly when they’re sleeping. Washing bedding won’t be enough to get rid of them – mattresses also need looking at too, so infestations usually require professionals. It has been known for whole blocks of flats to be infected at once.
Ants come into your home looking for food, particularly sweet, sticky food. So always clear up at mealtimes to prevent them. You might also find a nest in your garden, which can be disfiguring.
These are irritating as they bite their host to feed on their blood – whether that’s a human, dog, cat or bird. Keep a check on your pets for signs of itching and make sure to regularly wash their bedding and vacuum.
These not only cause a fright for home owners, they can cause damage by nibbling cables, which is costly but also a fire hazard. Mice breed rapidly, so if you can hear them or find mice droppings, it’s wise to look into control solutions.
Moles can ruin gardens by popping up to the surface and leaving their tell-tale mound behind. They’re a particular nuisance to farmers as they can burrow through crops. A variety of methods can be deployed to deter or get rid of moles.
SPIs, such as beetles, weevils, silverfish and moths, infest dry stored food, so they can pose a risk to food service business as well as spoil food in homes. Also make sure your food is covered to prevent them.
